Wedding at the beach! Things you should know

Most will think that a wedding at the beach is well…sandy…
I personally love looking through beach wedding pictures, there is something so magical about the sea.
I think most of us who plan beach weddings do so imagining a breezy, relaxed affair. Basically like the end of a romantic movie, however there are lots of things to consider before setting your sights on the ocean. So if you’re thinking about getting hitched in a beach wedding, here are a few things to check on first:

1.PUBLIC OR PRIVATE BEACH WEDDING

There have been arguments over who has the right to sand for decades. That said, if you’re having a smaller beach wedding (fifty or fewer guests), you may be able to find a private property on a secluded beach with owners who are comfortable hosting events in their space and get pretty close to private. But be forewarned: if that setup is what you’re after, start your search early. Even the most lenient hosts are often wary of events, so it can be hard finding someone who both has a secluded beach at their disposal and doesn’t mind letting you use their property as a home base. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done, though. Just give yourself lots of time to make it happen (and prepare yourself for lots of rejection).

2.CEREMONY OR RECEPTION OR BOTH

There’s a big difference between a ceremony on the beach with a reception to follow at a more traditional reception space (hall, restaurant, etc.) and a full-on beach blanket bingo with a hundred of your nearest and dearest. So before you start researching anything, figure out what kind of beach wedding you’re asking for. Permits and ordinances vary depending on what kind of gathering you’ll be having, whether food and drink are involved, if you’re asking to rope off a particular part of the beach, etc. In general, the path of least resistance is to have your ceremony on the beach, and then move the party somewhere that’s better equipped to handle a party. Bonus: that place can still be on the beach. If you’re getting married in the off-season (assuming your beach has one, but we’ll get to that next), beach-front venues might be willing to host an even on a weekend date when they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do much business.

3.PERMITS AND ORDINANCES

Beach rules vary by location and often the question you’ll be asking yourself is “Do I need a permit for this?” Check with the local government to see what regulations they have regarding events and gatherings. Some things to consider:

  • Are you having a big beach wedding or a small one? Some beaches have regulations about gatherings, so the more people you add to the guest list, the more you’ll want to check what those rules are.
  • Do you expect privacy? Hint: everything will be easier if the answer is “no.” But there may be options for roping off a section of the beach. So check your codes and see if there’s an option for obtaining a permit that keeps outsiders… outside.
  • Will there be alcohol outside? Most beaches prohibit alcohol consumption, so research your local codes to figure out if yours applies. Or just choose from one of these beaches to start with and you’ll be fine.
  • Do you plan on doing anything dangerous? Like starting a bonfire? Some beaches prohibit bonfires. Others simply require that you apply for a permit. In general the rule is if it might be dangerous, check if there’s a code or permit requirement.

4.ACCESSIBILITY

Sure, it might be lovely to get married with your toes in the sand. But can your wheelchair-bound Grandma make it to the ceremony to see you put said toes in the sand? Will your guests be standing? Are there options for those who will need to sit? Like any other outdoor ceremony space, the beach can add a layer of difficulty when it comes to accessibility. So consider your guest list and figure out if any additional accommodations will need to be made so that no one misses out.

5.AMPLIFICATION

Waves are loud, y’all. And beaches don’t necessarily come standard equipped with power outlets. So will your guests be able to hear you? Is your wedding small enough that you won’t need amplification? Or are you going to have to figure a portable power situation? Figure this stuff out in advance, or you may end up shouting to be heard in the rafters.

6.TIDES AND WEATHER

If you’re getting married in a park, there’s a good chance that half the park won’t suddenly disappear and be unavailable to you halfway through the day. But that’s what happens at the beach. So make sure your ceremony start time won’t be engulfed by ocean. Because having guests washed away to sea is a super bummer. And while we’re on the subject, don’t forget to check the seasonality of rain in your area.

Things that will make you say “I wish I did that at my wedding”

1- Have the groom write a message to the bride on the bottom of her shoe the morning of the wedding.

What is so flattering about this theme?

Well to be honest I have seen this combination of colours in a rustic wedding as well, specially for autumn, I guess the colours give an elegant vibe.
The different themes I’ve seen vary in decoration and the ways the colours are used. I have just put together some images to give a rough example on what exactly accentuates this colour scheme.

I guess you can start showing off the theme of your wedding by sending the invitation with these two colours, the image I found has the lettering in copper and the envelope is navy, however you can play with the arrangement and have them the other way.

 

 

 

With centre pieces there is so much room for creativity, this image in particular is a navy blue vase, with hydrangea, roses and a copper flower. everything surrounding the centre piece is copper.
It doesn’t necessarily needs to be this way, there are many ways that could be decorated.
This next image could also be a centre piece, this one is a copper vase, it looks simple yet elegant.
The flowers you could use here can vary but personally I like to have a variation and not just one type of flower.

 

 

 

I have seen many cakes with this particular palette.
This one in particular looks like midnight with stars.
I really liked this one I found because it’s exactly the colours of the theme. Others i have found are more washed, making it look more pastel like and not much of a navy colour.

 

 

 

 

 

There is a very popular rhyme that is called the four somethings, something blue is part of this rhyme and these accessories could be used for that purpose. Some brides chose to sew on a tiny blue heart inside the lining of their dress, with this theme, no need to hide it.

 

 

 

Bridesmaid dresses can be a little tricky since maybe not all them have the same size. With this theme there are five different colours to choose from. If one colour does not go with what was envisioned, it’s always a good idea to have more options.
Maybe have the exact same dress for all the bridesmaids or have the same colour and different necklines.

 

 

 

The groom and groomsmen could wear a boutonniere and a pocket square with the main two colours, it could be like the image or have the colours reversed.
In my opinion I think that the suit could be black or grey as it would make the colours stand out more.

Rustic Wedding!

I have gotten a request for a Champêtre wedding theme, with the main colours being white and green.

This theme goes well for Spring, Summer and Autumn. It is refreshing yet calm.
Personally I like this theme very much since it gives a feeling of a fairy getting married, with all the details looking vintage but at the same time they are not.
Given that the request I got was for white and green, I added some shades of the colours in between, to give more of a spectrum to work with.

What do you really need to look for to get this look?

You have to pretty much decorate it like a garden.
To the table you could add leaves or branches to make it come together, the table numbers could be placed in a little log or a branch.
The cake could be semi naked and decorated with flowers.
Baby’s breath (Gypsophila) works perfectly with this theme.
There could also be a floral backdrop for the ceremony or right behind the couple’s table.
The roof of the reception could be decorated with lights and orbs to give it that fairy tale look.

What type of wedding dress goes perfect with this theme?
Well that is a little complicated to say given that everyone has a different taste but in my opinion I think the Trumpet Dress and the Empire waist Dress go perfectly. You could also wear flowers as a headpiece.

What can your bridesmaids wear?
I like when the dresses are a shade of what the colour is, in this case shades of green, it doesn’t necessarily needs to be like that, you can also have the same colour for all them and have the neckline vary.

There are just so many things you could do with this theme.
Even if it is the same general name, these type of weddings never look the same, different palette and decorations make them so different, as well as the variations of location!

Pop of colour!

For those that love a pop of colour, how about Teal and Fuchsia!
You can play about with these two colours and no matter what you do with them, they always seem to go perfectly.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be for your wedding, it can also be for your bridal shower!
I have placed a palette together at the top of the page which can be used as guidance, for when you are gathering all the decorations as well as flower arrangements.

As you have been able to notice this type of decoration is more fitting for either a spring wedding or a summer wedding, it gives a little bit more of freshness!

Pick the right theme!

There are many themes you could have for your wedding, but which one is the one that suits you and your partner?

There are people who have known what their wedding would look like ever since they were small, I know because I am one of them, I know exactly what I want and how I want it.
So I will try to enlighten you on how to pick a theme for your wedding, one that suits you as much as your partner.
But why do you have to choose a theme? The theme will tie together the personal elements of your wedding and create a mood that will show who you and your partner are as a couple.

First of all you have to pick a venue, the venue will most likely be the reflection of you and your partner. If it’s in a ballroom or a destination wedding. When you picture your wedding where do you see it?

Secondly sit down and brainstorm ideas, the main things to consider are the hobbies and activities you enjoy together, favourite things in common like art or music.
If you both like a certain place then it can be general like all things France, or if you like a certain movie, a colour you both have in common, think of keywords that you both use.

Thirdly, ever since pinterest has been around, it has made visions so much clearer. It will be your best friend and it will clear any doubts, once you start pinning, you will realise what type of style you are most drawn too, I for example like to pin rustic themes which you can check out here.

I think that those are the main points to cover when picking out a theme.
You can always ask help from family and friends try to explain your theme once you have it, they will help add to your ideas.

Designers whose job is to help brides define their wedding style and design their weddings around it.

…and I’m back

Yep, I know. I have been away for a while. A lot has happened, not going to go into detail but lets say that I was in a bit of a rough patch, but now that I have time to sit down I will write a little bit.

I decided to build up a website and have been doing my own templates, for those brides to keep track of what they need to do and what has been done already. There are many things one can miss but since it is taking FOREVER  to actually finish the website, I will share it here.
Look out for that new tab where you can find 2 templates. The latest I have been working on is a Wedding binder, which you will see soon enough.

I guess that is all I have to say for now.

Pop-Up

Hello there,

No, I have not forgotten to write, I was actually quite busy and did not have time to sit down 😦

So many things happened, between my son and me getting a cold and an impromptu visit to Barcelona (for business), my aunt arriving from Malaysia, it has been quite full.

BUT

I’m not going to talk about that any more, as promised, I took a lot of pictures from the event and it was quite wonderful, there were not a lot of providers since it was the first time this has ever been made and I guess there were a lot of companies that were scared that no one would show up.

Nevertheless it was great! As you know I have mentioned that I am part of a group of Latin Women (the link should be on the side bar) well we took the opportunity of the event to launch ourselves, it was quite successful, we have had 3000 visitors in just a week, which I believe is incredible (if you were to live where I do, you would know why) Our goal is to reach all Latin people around the world and to get the message across that it doesn’t matter if you are far from your country, you can still enjoy the traditions wherever you are.
